Industrial Communication
and Industry 4.0

Applications

An intelligent, interconnected automation environment requires systems, machines and robots to be digitally connected. The connectors used by devices to communicate and the factory network are the basis of Industry 4.0. Timely access and transmission of data depend on the physical quality of the connection and network connectivity. Network technology must evolve with processes while ensuring efficiency and determinism to manage an ever-increasing volume of information.

The need for continuous connectivity for each sensor and actuator, even in the most remote locations in all factory areas, is among the most demanding challenges for implementing Industry 4.0.

ETHERNET VS INDUSTRIAL ETHERNET

Solutions

Ethernet and Industrial Ethernet have become popular terms in the manufacturing world. Although similar, they both offer different features and benefits. Ethernet was born as an inclusive network, enabling the connection of multiple devices on a single expandable network.

In the same way that standard Ethernet allows file-sharing or access to network devices, Industrial Ethernet allows controllers to access data and send instruction commands to PLCs, sensors, actuators, and robots located in the factory compartment. The critical point is the impact caused by delayed or undelivered messages.

Industrial Ethernet follows the requirement of industry 4.0: a modification of standard Ethernet technology, achieving the determinism required by modern production processes while maintaining the inclusiveness and expandability typical of an Ethernet network. A unique and transversal language in the factory.

A SIMPLE UNIVERSAL WIRING

The simplicity of implementation offered by Ethernet translates into standardized, compact and easy-to-wire connectors. The use of patch cords RJ45 represents one of the most common types of connection between devices.

CJK 8M is the universal system designed by ILME to install and host most RJ45 patch cord plugs available on the market. The adapter insert can quickly and easily make captive the RJ45 plugs without disassembling of the patch cord.
CJK 8M is comprised of 3 key components working together: the two-part insulating carrier which holds the plug and a special sealing gasket, which is longitudinally cut to be applied on the cable and increase its diameter to fit the cable gland sealing and ensure an IP67 degree of protection.

SPE: unique choice for the Ethernet ecosystem

To make Ethernet technology end-to-end from the sensor to the cloud, new technologies must be developed with standardized, cost-effective and space-saving components. Standardized mating faces form the basis for barrier-free components, cables and connectors networking.

ILME is currently supporting the development of a standardized connector interface, the SPE Single Pair Ethernet connector, aiming to fulfil the essential requirements for IoT and Industry 4.0 applications: scalable, deterministic and fully compatible so that all components can communicate with each other.

  • Consistent: Uniform Ethernet-based communication from the sensor to the cloud
  • Future-proof: Overarching key technology for Industry 4.0 and IIoT
  • Simple: Reduced cabling effort due to reduction to only one wire pair
  • Flexible: Can be used across applications thanks to ranges of up to 1,000 m and transmission speeds of up to 1 GBit/s
